New digitised system for the entry of foreigners into the European Union

The European Union has implemented a new system regulating the entry of non-EU travellers.

This system, known as the Entry/Exit System (EES), involves a series of measures that will affect all non-European citizens wishing to enter any Schengen country.

The new system will eliminate traditional passports and will digitally collect the following data:

  • Traveller’s personal information: name, date of birth, and nationality.
  • Date and place of entry into the Schengen countries (Spain, in this case).
  • Biometrics: facial image and fingerprints (except for children under 12 years old, who will only provide a photograph).
  • Record of entry refusals, if any.

This information will be collected via machines installed at certain ports, with full implementation being progressive until April 2026.

Before boarding, make sure you have a valid permit to enter the Schengen area (visa or ETIAS authorisation). More information here: Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At Balearia, we will verify, through the eu-LISA (Carrier Interface) platform, the validity of the visa or the status of the ETIAS authorisation, and boarding may be denied.
