Travelling with pets

Travelling with your pet is very easy. All you have to do is decide on the type of accommodation you want your pet to travel in and select it when you purchase your ticket.  

If you want your pet to travel with you in your cabin:

To reserve a company carrier, you'll need to indicate this at the bottom of the reservation, in the section "improve your trip". You can choose if you need to bring your pet on the outbound or return trip or both. You can also choose the size of the carrier. 

Most are on deck and some are in the ship's hold, always in protected and appropriately ventilated spaces.

If your pet is going to travel in a carrier, you'll be told at the vessel's reception desk where the pet area is located.

If your pet travels in the carrier area, you aren't allowed to accompany it during the crossing. For this reason, on ourSmart Ships , we've installed a video surveillance system that allows you to monitor your pet while you enjoy the voyage. 

If your vessel is not aSmart  Ship, no need to worry. Our crew will be sure to notify you if there's a problem. 

On long journeys, you can also visit your pet and take it for a walk in designated areas.You can check visiting times at the ship's reception desk. 

If you want to accompany your pet during the entire trip, you can travel in specially adapted cabins for pets, where the two of you can travel in the utmost comfort together.  For more information, check here. 

You must have the following documents: 

• Boarding passwith reference to your pet (either pet-friendly cabin or pet-friendly cage)
• Animal's valid health card

If you travel on the Algeciras-Tangiers route:you must have the documents required by the European Union and by the Kingdom of Morocco.

Baleària is not responsible for denial of entry by the country's authorities. We recommend checking with both embassies or consulates.

If you travel with your pet to Algeria, an additional document is required: 

• Document: passport or animal health certificate of origin forms according to RULE 577/2013
• Microchip identification
•  Valid rabies vaccination
• Proof of rabies antibody titration (From countries other than the ones on the list included in RULE 577/2013) in a sample taken at least 30 days after the vaccination and at least three months before the trip/ticket > 0.5 UI/ml.
• If the animal is vaccinated again during the validity period, the serology will not be renewed.The three months do not apply in case of the re-entry of a pet that received a favourable assessment. 
• The vaccination cannot be prior to the identification or before three months have elapsed.

 If any of these requirements are not met, the health authorities will deny the animal entry and present the owner with three options:euthanisation, quarantine or return the animal to the departure point.

BOE-A-2002-6016 (Royal Decree 287/2002) includes a list as well as the rules for having and travelling with potentially dangerous dogs. 

These dogs must board, disembark and remain in specially designated areas of the vessel (walking areas) and must be on a leash and muzzled. Otherwise, they will not be allowed to board. 

Service dogs travelling with disabled passengers, in accordance with specific regulations, are permitted access to all the rooms on the vessel. Service dogs board for free,  although you need to indicate you will be travelling with one when booking your reservation.

Emotional support animals are included in this category, as long as the passenger has a certificate from the doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist accrediting it.

According the European Directive for animal ro-ro passenger ferries, you can consult EC Council Rule No. 1/2005, 22 de 2004.

If you are traveling with your hunting dogs and have a car or trailer equipped, they will be able to travel in it.

They can also do so in areas designated for pets.

Make sure they have what they need (food and water) for the voyage. 

Remember: For safety reasons, you aren't allowed to go down to the hold to visit the animals while the vessel is moving.

If you travel with uncommon companion animals, you must have your own carrier, which will be placed next to the pet-friendly cages in the designated area for carriers.
