Travelling with pets

Passengers with pets wishing to travel on the Tanger Med route to Motril must comply with a series of health requirements set by the Ministry of Health to allow the animal to cross the border. Otherwise, the pet will be declared non-compliant, and the authorities will proceed with reexpedition to the port of origin, isolation (at the owner's expense), or euthanasia.

The requirements to be met are:

1. Identification: Dogs, cats, and ferrets must be identified with a microchip or tattoo (if applied before July 3, 2011).
2. Documentation: It is necessary to present an EU passport or a health certificate issued by an official veterinarian in the country of origin, with a certified copy of vaccination and identification. The UK passport is not valid, but the Northern Ireland passport is.
3. Rabies vaccination: The vaccine must be administered by a licensed veterinarian, be up-to-date, and applied at least 21 days before travel if it is the initial vaccination.
4. Serological test: Required for animals from non-listed countries, such as Morocco, it must be conducted at least 30 days after vaccination and show a result greater than 0.5 IU. Animals must wait 3 months after the sample is taken to enter the EU.

In case of non-compliance with the requirements, the animals will be declared non-compliant and the authorities will decide whether to reexpedite the animal, isolate it under official control, or euthanize it, with costs borne by the owner.

Calm kennels

Areas designed for transporting your pet, with ventilation and special cleaning services. Depending on the ship, you can visit them during the crossing and/or monitor your pet’s journey through your mobile device. You can find more information about this accommodation here. 

Pet-friendly seat

Superior seating accommodation where you can travel with your pet on your lap throughout the journey. Pets travel inside their carrier with special conditions. You can find more information about this accommodation here. 

Pet-friendly cabin

Cabins specially designed for transporting your pet where you can be comfortable throughout your trip. You can find more information about this accommodation here. 

1. Make your route and schedule selection for the trip. In this same section, you can include the number of pets traveling with you and their size. 

2. Choose the accommodation where you want to travel (seat or cabin). 

2.1 If you choose a seat, later you will be able to add your pet to the reservation, allowing it to travel in a pet-friendly seat (with you during the entire journey in a carrier) or calm kennel. 

2.2 If you choose a cabin, later you will be able to add your pet, allowing it to travel in a pet-friendly seat, calm kennel, or pet-friendly cabin. 

Passengers with animals will board last for safety reasons and to prevent pets from becoming stressed by so many people.

As in boarding, your pet must be leashed or inside a carrier/cage. If the animal is considered to be of a dangerous breed or is not very social, it must be muzzled as well.

These are adapted cabins with a drinking trough and bed for your pet.The floors in these cabins are vinyl, and a special cleaning protocol ensures maximum hygiene.

For the moment, this accommodation is available on the ferries Hypatia de Alejandría, Marie Curie, Rosalind Franklin, Abel Matutes, Bahama Mama, Dénia Ciutat Creativa, Hedy Lamarr, Sicilia, Nápoles, Martín i Soler and Kerry.

Conditions: 

• 2 animals can be accommodated, provided that the weight of the two pets together does not exceed 30kg. If they weigh more than 30kg, only one per cabin is allowed.
• Remember you will be solely responsiblefor your pet. This includes its food and picking up after it, as well as any damage it might cause.

The pet-friendly seat is a new space where you can travel accompanied by your pet throughout the journey. In this accommodation, any type of pet can travel as long as it weighs no more than 8kg, including the carrier. Throughout the journey, the pet must be in the carrier at all times, either on the passenger's lap or at their feet.

1. What pets can travel in this new Pet-Friendly Seat accommodation?

Dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, non-poultry birds... In this new accommodation, any pet can travel as long as it weighs no more than 8 kilograms, including the carrier. One pet per passenger is allowed.

2. Where do pets travel in this new accommodation?

In the new Pet-Friendly seat accommodation, pets will travel in their carrier, either on the passenger's lap or under the seat. The carrier can be brought by the passenger, although carriers will be available in a specific area of the lounge, subject to availability. In no case can the pet leave the carrier.

3. What should the carrier be like?

The carrier or bag suitable for transporting animals must be a maximum of 60cm x 35cm x 35cm and must have a device for containing and removing waste.

4. Can my pet come out of the carrier?

Pets cannot come out of their carrier under any circumstances. Depending on the duration of the journey, a walk time will be arranged in a specific area of the ship and must always be authorized by the ship's crew. When traveling with pets of all kinds, we must ensure the tranquility of our animal friends!

5. On which ships is this new accommodation available?

This new accommodation is available on many of our ferries and fast ferries such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Abel Matutes, Bahama Mama, Cecilia Payne, Ramon Llull, and Jaume III, among others.

If this service does not appear when you make your reservation, it may not be available on the designated ship for your journey or there may be no availability.

6. How do I book to travel in this new accommodation?

Pets, to travel in this new accommodation, must always appear on the passenger's boarding pass. Pets not listed on the ticket will not be accepted in this accommodation.

When booking your ferry ticket, you will need to search for your journey as usual, selecting the origin and destination as well as the travel date. Continue to the extras; now you just have to enhance your travel experience in the "pet accommodation" section, add your pet to the Pet-Friendly Seat accommodation.

7. Is there an additional cost for this accommodation?

The new Pet-Friendly Seat accommodation service incurs an additional cost that you will need to check according to the route you are traveling.

8. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PASSENGERS WITH PETS ORIGIN AND/OR DESTINATION CEUTA AND MELILLA:

Passengers with pets wishing to travel on routes with origin or destination in Ceuta and Melilla must comply with the following requirements:

1. Identification with a microchip for the animal.

2. Have a vaccination booklet with rabies vaccination valid within the last 12 months.

3. Possess a European passport for companion animals.

Animals can only be introduced through an authorized port as a Point of Entry for Travelers.

In the boats where there is enough space we have enabled ride areas, some are in the zone of calm houses where the animals housed there can leave and others located near the animal cabins where the cabin guests can attend.

These are areas with a small dog park and space for them to stretch their legs. Remember that you are responsible for collecting your pet's waste and any damage it may cause in the area or to third parties.

Passengers with pets who wish to travel on routes to or from Ceuta and Melilla should note that it is essential to comply with the following requirements:

• Pet identification with a microchip.
• Have a vaccination card with a valid rabies vaccine administered in the last 12 months.
• Be in possession of the European pet passport.

Animals can only be introduced through an authorized port designated as a Traveler Entry Point.
